Looking out on the harbor from Canton Waterfront Park. Canton Waterfront Park filled up once again Friday night as WTMD’s First Thursday concerts returned for a new season. While the VIPs appeared to be having a good time up close and the blankets spread on the grass looked relaxing, this late-arriving writer sought out the only space that seemed to be free: behind the stage. Along with plenty of ability to hear, this offered an excellent view of the harbor. After sets from Kopecky and Marah, Timothy Showalter of Philly-based Strand of Oaks encouraged everyone to “get loose.” In truth, his long hair offered the encouragement in itself. After a set of their own solos and looping melodies, the band ended on a raucous note with a cover of The Replacements’ “Alex Chilton,” sending everyone home happy, and perhaps wanting more.
